I'm not sure how I would feel about integrating cell phones into the elementary classroom. High school? Definitely. I do agree with integrating tablets and similar devices. If the school I was teaching at had a bring your own device policy, I would allow smart phones, but I would prefer for students to bring an ipod or tablet rather than a cell phone.

I believe that technology is an important aspect that should be incorporated into the classroom. However, cellphones are a distraction and although they could be beneficial, I think that they would cause more problems than anything. Smart phones are more popular and allow students access to the internet and other social medias. I think that phones would take away from students using their imagination and coming up with original ideas. Now a days people use pinterest if they need an idea for school or any daily task.

ReplyDeleteI would integrate phones into my class if and only if every student owned a phone. Some students may be under privileged, so if a student does not a phone that is not advanced enough to effectively be used as a tool, then it would be unfair to them to exclude them from the lesson. If every student does have an advanced phone that is able to effectively be used through my curriculum then I would take advantage of that fact. I am curious about the financial burden this could place on individuals if the student does not have unlimited text messages or unlimited data plans.
This video showed phones being used in many positive ways such as research and reminders. Students were able to have access to their work and needed materials at all times. The teacher can use the text messaging responses of questions as an assessment tool. Help can be given to those who need it with more discretion so that the student does not feel like they are being pointed out in front of their peers.
1. The idea of cell phones in the classroom can be a daunting thought for many teachers. I think cell phones can be a very good thing if you utilizes them in manner the that help improve or extend a lesson. I would definitely not recommend using them in grades K-2 for disruption reasons, but I would be for K-2 students using some simple applications of an Ipad to boost instructional and learning.
ReplyDelete2. I found that the QR codes can be a great instrument to improve classroom management and facilitate student learning in a way the unique. Infusing technology with math, science, language arts and other content areas can be easily done with the parlay of different technologies available today. You can extend a social studies lesson with language arts simply by using a smart board to show pictures to the class before a reading about the "Stock Market Crash of 1929", this can help engage the students more before the lesson with enthusiasm simply by introducing pictures for a general formative assessment of prior knowledge. The process can go on and on with many other ideas for instruction in the classroom.
I have mixed feelings about using smart phones in the classroom. I see why using technology is important for the student, but I also believe that phones should not be used to enhance the classroom. Smart phones could be used maybe in high school since students are more responsible, but I think laptops, iPods, and tablets should be the primary teaching tool in the elementary schools. There are great apps for these devices and I think that students will be utilizing these to their advantage. Using technology to enhance a subject is a great idea, the students in the video used their devices to find out what the machine in the classroom was. They had a sense of accomplishment at the end , but I think this worked out this well since the students were much older. Overall I think integrating technology, in this case cellphone into the classroom is a great advantage for the student and teacher if handled correctly.
ReplyDeleteInitially, I've been against phones in the classroom. However, after watching this video and seeing how much good it is doing in my daughter's class, I have changed my stance. I believe cell phones can be a great benefit in classrooms if used appropriately. They can be used for all kinds of projects and subjects. Teachers must already have the lesson plan and use of the technology set prior to the class period. If a teacher knows in advance what the students will be using the technology for it will make the control of the technology easier. There are many apps available for every subject area to aid in learning of that subject. Students already know how to use the technology for fun activities, why not show them how to use it for learning also. It's important for students to be engaged in their learning. Allowing the use of cell phones and other technology grabs their attention and keeps it by using avenues they are already tapped into and find interesting.
ReplyDeleteI personally believe personal cell phones have no place in a school or in a classroom unless they can be registered to the schools much like a cell phone tower and schools have the right to see what is going on with the phones as long as they are in the building. On the other hand schools now days have iPhones that teachers can check out and let the students use. Now these phones can be used only by students during class time and the teacher can have one and can text his or her students and vice versa for academic purposes. If the cell phone takes away from the personal learning experience that happens in the classroom cellphones should not be used but if the teacher is creative and they add to the learning environment and experience then they are acceptable. I guess I am saying I see both sides of the cell phone issues but even as a college student I am not allowed to use my cell phone during a lot of class time and when they are needed and acceptable, such as research, reminders, and notes, I see the pros of including them into the classroom. It is a matter of them adding to the experience and not taking away from the experience or one on one classroom time.
ReplyDeleteI think it's alright to integrate cellphone in middle and high school but not so much elementary. This has to be for educational purposes only. there's times where i feel as if its okay to use cellphones and then again i don't. the reason is because not everyone will use those for educational purposes some will use it as a way of networking while in school which is not the idea behind it. so to avoid those problems, i think the school should provide ipads and tablets that a teacher can use with the students so that the students wouldn't get sidetracked.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of integrating cellphones into classrooms is pretty controversial because some people like the idea, some don't. I believe that using cellphones in classrooms is more appropriate for middle school and up. Even then, teachers have to make sure that they monitor students while they are given the privilege to use their cellphones for classroom assignments, because even though they are allowed to use their cellphone, there is a great chance that not all 20+ students in the class will be focused on the task that they are suppose to be doing, and could be doing other things on their cellphones. Integrating cellphones into the classroom is a great way for students to be interested in their work however, since it is something that they already like to do on a regular basis. When it comes to using cellphones in the Elementary level, I don't think it is 100% necessary for students to have to use phones, iPod's, iPad's etc, especially because it can be an unfair experience for some students when there aren't enough iPod's to go around the classroom. However, if there are enough iPod's for everyone in the classroom, then yes! It is a great idea to keep students engaged in the new technology.
ReplyDeleteI know that times are changing and technology is being integrated in the classrooms more and more, but I don't think I agree with cell phones in the classroom. Yes, they could use it for emergencies, but they could also use the school phone or their teacher phone. I don't agree because I almost sure that it will cause problems in the classroom and too much distraction. Will the students really be listening to the teacher? I don't think so. They will be in their desks just texting, playing games, etc. so, I don't agree with integrating cell phones in the classroom because I believe it will take away from instructional time.
ReplyDeleteThese phones can be used in a positive way in the schools. in most schools, there aren't enough computers in the classroom, so instead of taking a trip to the computer lab, the students can pull out their cell phones and complete any activity. also, in class we used that scanner resource. This would be great to use in the classrooms. Students could use their phone to scan different assignments that the teacher made. There are many ways cell phones could be used in the schools, but you just have to monitor and be careful that the students are doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing.
1. I definitely agree with integrating cell phones in the classroom! There are SO many things that students can do using just their cell phone! Just about every student nowadays has a cell phone (most of them being smart phones) so it would be a great way to incorporate them into the curriculum. Being teachers, we are constantly learning new information, but we will never be able to give our students every single detail about one topic. That's where these cell phones come in to play. The internet is the best resource for students to learn about any and everything that's out there!

Just using them for Google, or QR codes, or polling as in the video are all great ways to use cell phones! Everyone is always using cell phones for everything else, so why can't we use them for teaching?

ReplyDeleteI do not agree with integrating cell phones in the classroom. I think they should be allowed in school, just not in the classroom. It is true that technology is becoming a way of life now, but there are too many cons associated with having cell phones in the classroom. First of all, they can be a major distraction. The students would be texting, playing games, on social networks, and so much more. Also, cell phones take away from communication. The students would be so busy texting each other that they would forget how to have an actual face to face conversation. Texting also hurts students when it comes to grammar and mechanics. Another con is that cell phones could definitely encourage cheating. Students could easily text each other answers during a graded assignment or test. This is only hurting them in the long run because they did not truly understand the material. They could also use the internet to search for answers, and this still does not truly help them. Most of all, cell phones in the classroom could result in a high theft rate. There might even be some students who cannot afford a cell phone, and he or she would not be able to keep up with the rest of the classroom without one. Overall, I totally disagree with cell phones in the classroom.

They can be used to get an immediate response from students, and they can also be used to get the students more interested and engaged in learning. The use of cell phones can also potentially cut down on paper usage. Cell phones could be used for QR codes and internet searching as well. I cannot think of many reasons why cell phones could be used in a positive way in schools because I am totally against it.
In a middle school or high school setting, I believe that integrating cell phones into the classroom could be beneficial to learning. Prior to using cell phones, I believe that it is crucial to have a head count of how many students have their own cell phone. After determining the amount of students that do not have access to a cell phone, the teacher should ensure that enough laptops or tablets are available for those students.

The students may also research certain topics on their cell phones and exchange information with peers. The students may also use a cell phone to text ideas and answers to a live poll provided by the teacher. In addition, students could use their cell phone to tweet about a specific topic.
I believe that integrating cell phones and other electronics could completely allow both teachers and students a new way of learning. We are able to use cell phones to access all sorts of information and more importantly, current information. Using textbooks leaves us at a disadvantage for the great information that can be presented on the internet each day. Not only can we use cell phones for knowledge, but we can use them for formative assessment. Using polling websites, we can have students answer questions and send responses that will allows us to gauge student learning.
ReplyDeleteI think integrating cell phones and other electronics into classroom lessons is a excellent idea. I can remember sitting in classes and just texting or playing on my phone. The students are going to go against the rules that are in place for technology. If they are going to use the phones in class anyway, why not benefit from it? We should use the things that children really enjoy to grab their attention and keep them focused on the work that is taking place in the class. We can use the students phones to share information, have blogs, and participate in classroom discussions. We should do whatever it takes to keep the students interested in the class, if that takes integrating call phones into curriculum then i think we should just embrace it. I do think that while it is okay to bring cell phones into the classroom, there is also a time where they would need to be put away.

I think cell phone integration would require discretion and something that I would want to incorporate only after building trust among the studets.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try the poll everywhere site with students as a way to engage students maybe during a formative assessment. It would also be a great way to receive feedback from students, as well. The students could also use their phones to take a picture of notes or to use the dictionary or thesaurus.
I agree with using cell phones in the classroom but I think it's something that needs to be watched carefully to make sure students aren't taking advantage of that resource. I think it should be used because in today's society, it's unrealistic that cell phones won't be around. Let's be honest: whether their allowed or not, students will be using them throughout the day. So, why not have them use cell phones in a productive way? For example: I loved seeing the science classrooms use them as a way to search what the mystery object was. This is an example of a positive way to use cell phones in the classroom. I know from experience that I have used my cell phone when I wasn't supposed to; however, when my instructors told us to get our phones out and search something, I did not text or check Facebook, I did the research.
ReplyDeleteAs I mentioned, we need to be careful not to let cell phones and technology completely take over but I think it'd be silly to ban them or not let them be used in today's society. It's a technology age and students will honestly learn better with it.
I do believe that cell phones should be integrated into classrooms. Cell phones are going to school with some children regardless. I think that cell phones would be more beneficial for middle school grades and high school grades. People can argue that students would be distracted by other things on the cell phones, but there are firewalls that do not allow students to get on certain apps or websites while on the schools WiFi. I just feel like students are going to get on their phones regardless if they have permission or not. If we give them permission and guidelines, they are more apt to follow the rules. If teachers and schools are going to allow students to use cell phones for instructional purposes, there should be alternatives for students who do not have access to a smart phone. Some of these alternatives are iPods, tablets, and laptops.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many positive uses of cell phones in the classroom. You can use cell phones to do research, play educational games, and do group work/homework. I personally love using technology, and I think that cell phones are an awesome way to incorporate tech into learning.
Just like any educational resource, there must be boundaries.
Even after all of the pro cell phone videos and in class discussions, I am still torn on integrating cell phones into the classroom. On one hand I can see all of the great uses for it like QR code reading and texting in student responses. It would be an ideal way to integrate the technology that the students can't seem to put down with learning. It sounds fantastic! However, then I think back to my practical side and I am hesitant to have any cell phone use at all. By using cellphones and such, I am assuming that all of the students have a cell phone or even a smartphone. I didn't get internet/smartphone until the past year. If all of the students had the technology, I feel I would be dellusional if I thought the students would only use their phones for school uses and at appropriate times. Even the video said that students would find a way to text whether its in a pocket or behind their back. It would still happen even if I gave them a chance to use it in class.

I love the idea that they could submit their answers for the class and have it show up in front of the class (only graphs though, not text because I would not be able to see what they write before it shows...I don't trust them). I also like the idea of incorporating the QR codes into the classroom like we have done in class.
Why should we expect students to use the "knowledge in their own brain," like Nelson from The Simpsons pointed out, when we as future educators use the internet constantly to come up with ways to teach something or to learn more about a subject that we will be teaching?

I admit that it will be challenge, and there will be extra precautions that we will have to take but if we are thinking about what benefits that students more, like we should be, then we will be able to comprehend that cell phones in the classroom are the right way to go.
Schools are equipped with firewalls as long as the cellphones are using the schools WiFi system, so for a student to be able to use their own cellphones in the classroom it must be mandatory for them to be connected to school WiFi. Students will use their cellphones, regardless if they're allowed to or not, so why not let them but set rules for them to follow? Cell phones could be used for many purposes, but I think it would be especially useful in high school more than the early grades, although elementary school children would get a head start at learning how to use smart phones in a positive way. Children would be able to do research, homework, it would also benefit the teachers because they would have another resource to use with the students.
Technology is a great thing to incorporate into the classroom. Videos can help with spitting out the standards. Games can help children learn and practice the standards on their own. I do not like the idea of students using cellphones in the classroom. Cellphones can be used for educational purposes, but also texting and facebooking. I would much rather my classroom use school owned tablets in the classroom. That way I could be in charge of what applications are on the tablet. I have no problem with using the technology, it is just the option to be off task while using the technology.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with using cell phones in the classroom. As a (future) high school English teacher, I often ponder over the advantages and disadvantages of allowing students to use cell phones as an instructional method. Personally, I would rather incorporate the use of school distributed computers, laptops, iPods, iPads, etc. into my daily lesson plans rather than allow students to depend on their cell phones; these school-owned devices generally block unwanted websites that could potentially cause distractions for students. High school students are typically easily distracted by websites such as Facebook and Twitter and/or text messaging their friends, and I imagine that the teacher can only control their usage of these “banned” cell phone activities to a certain extent without wasting too much instructional time. Although I do not agree with the use of cell phones in the classroom, I am not anti-technology either. In today’s society, teachers are obligated to incorporate technology into their classrooms (as technology undeniably invades the lives of students each and every day), but I believe there are other ways to positively incorporate technological aspects into daily instruction without depending upon the use of cell phones.
ReplyDeleteI believe that allowing the use of cell phones in the classroom positively impacts student engagement and motivation. Our students are growing up in the digital age. Students are motivated to communicate and connect through technology, so why shouldn’t we capitalize on our student’s interest. In today’s society, people want to access and share information as quickly as possible. Our students are accustomed to utilizing their cell phones to connect to the world around them and access information. Both of these things could be easily added into the classroom as long as the appropriate management techniques were in place.

First off, education is way behind in how we teach when our methods really should change with the times (if not ahead of the times). Rather than being behind in technology, teachers should be first in line to innovate. We have to teach the way students learn, and right now, they’re technology crazy. Students will engage more if they view information in a way that they are used to rather than being forced to learn skills that have very little value in the workplace.
ReplyDeleteOf course there will be abuses of the personal devices; however, cell phone confiscation would be less of an issue if the devices were aloud. However, strong expectations must be set. At the very least, students should be allowed to use them during “out of class” hours like in the hallway, or cafeteria. It’s important to prepare students for the workplace. They need to be taught proper etiquette on when it’s okay to use their phone, and when it’s not okay.
Cell phones should definitely be allowed in the classroom. As a secondary ed teacher, I know that the majority of my students will have cell phones in their pockets anyway. My own children have cell phones that they take to school every day so that they can let me know about athletic practices and meetings that they must attend after school. So, why not incorporate cell phones into a lesson in some way. A resourceful teacher could design a very engaging and fun lesson for his/her students with just a little research and creativity. Of course, cell phones in the classroom must have limits and restrictions. But, so does everything else. Let the students know at the beginning of the year what the limits of cell phone use in the classroom are and enforce those rules.
ReplyDeleteWhile I think that cell phones can be positively integrated and used as an instructional tool in the classroom, I also know the reality of allowing students to use their phones really just means to them they get to text their friends, get on facebook and play games. As a teacher, or anyone for that matter, you can't control how students are using their cellphones when you allow them to bring them out. I have personally allowed students to use their phones for a warm up using polleverywhere.com and it went very well but that does not mean I would use their phones everyday or for more than just the warm up. I believe the schools are getting more and more technology resources than ever before and if technology is wanted for the classroom then I will get the school's set of ipads, ipods or computers that way I know the students can't get on sites that are meant for socializing. So while it sounds good in theory I believe students will mostly be distracted by the use of their phones and I will probably find other ways of using technology and limit the use of cell phones for my own classroom.
ReplyDeleteI feel that cell phones should be integrated into the classroom. There are ways to make this a positive change. For instance, in our technology class, we downloaded the QR reader so that we could use our cell phones to walk around the room and read the QR codes on the different assignments that could be in a classroom setting. I have been unable to do this in the classroom as an activity because there are not enough available ipods to go around.
ReplyDeleteThere are always going to be negatives with every positive. One of my negative concerns would be that it is hard to control what the students are doing on their cell phone. It would be impossible to monitor every single screen. That all boils down to classroom management though. Just because they are allowed to have their cell phones out for a certain assignment, does not mean that they should be allowed to hav ethem out the entire day. Students should be actively engaged in the assignment with their technology and if they aren't then they would lose their phone priviledges.
I agree with having cell phones in the classroom, I believe that all future classrooms will be using cellphones and iPads within the classroom within the next century. This generation of students is extremely use to using technology within their everyday lives, they have learned through technology since they were babies, I believe it is more beneficial for them to learn through technology as long as it is monitored. Technology can be used in a positive way by expanding creativity and ideas within the classroom. Technology also allows for children to learn networking skills and communicate with other students around them as well as across the world. It allows student to learn about different approaches and insights to certain life situations as well as in the classroom.

If we are banning things that will exist in the real world we are just working against the students and teaching them practices they will not use or enjoy.
ReplyDeleteCell phones and tablets now can pretty much do everything if you want them to. I have most of my textbooks on my phone and iPad. I also have work apps to create word documents, power points, and spreadsheets. I can easily start an assignment on my phone and then turn on my iPad or computer and pick up where i left off. All in all I can carry my textbooks, notes, assignments, and have the power of research all in one device.
I’m kind of bias when it comes to this topic, but I know one thing cellphones in Elementary School is not necessary, in my opinion. They will be a big distraction for the students. As for Middle and High School I think it could be a good idea. Cellphones nowadays do so many different things that can be beneficial to the students, but then there are so many things that can be a distractions for the students as well, like social networks and texting. There would need to be a lot of monitoring if cellphones are allowed. If the students can be mature and follow given directions then there are endless things they can do with their cellphones, as far as learning. It is our responsibility as future teachers to prepare the students for the real world and cellphones are definitely a part of the real world, so they should have the knowledge of the endless apps and websites that can be beneficial to their learning, but it also our responsibility to teach them and if the cellphones are a distraction then they shouldn’t be allowed.

ReplyDeleteI think that with as much technology that we have available that leaving cell phones out of the classroom would be okay. There are definitely positive and negative aspects about using cell phones in the classroom. I preferably would not want them in my classroom because elementary school students have no need for a cell phone. I think it would be appropriate for middle and high school grades but not elementary school. The number one reason why I think students should not have cell phones in the classroom is because it can be major distraction. As a teacher you cannot put restrictions on what they are doing when you are trying to teach a lesson. If you were teaching a lesson the students would be texting, watching videos, or on social media majority of the time. They would not be participating the way they should be if cell phones were allowed. I think that cell phones also take away from students working and verbally working together. If the students solely just texted one another it would take away from their communication skills. There is also the problem that some students may not have the luxury of having a cell phone. This student may get made fun of or picked not for not having a cell phone. Leaving cell phones out of the classroom would be fine with me. The positive outlook on having cell phones in the classroom is it is a fast source of research, you are able to communicate or send a message out faster and different games that students can play. All of which are great things to incorporate but like I said I do not think that students should be allowed to have cell phones in the classrooms.
ReplyDeleteI think bringing in cell phones for school work is unnecessary for elementary. I do not see a big problem with it in the upper grade levels like middle school or high school. I think it could work great with the right protocols and the right students. I believe bringing in a variety of technology is important in education. The reality of it is, cell phones are a huge part of our lives today. I do not think it could take a way a lot from education if it is used properly. There are a lot of great tools and applications on cell phones. It is a great way for students to look things up quickly without bothering the teacher. Similar to what the video said, students are going to use their phones regardless. Cell phones could be a great tool in the classroom but it can also be a great distraction. Cell phones have almost become like tablets or mini computers, they are a great technology resource. They have already allowed laptops and ipods in the schools. I do not believe that cell phones are that much greater of a difference. However, there could be problems with the unfair ability to participate. All students do not own cell phones so this could be a problem. Another problem that could arise is that students may not use proper grammar when they are allowed to communicate assignments through cell phones. Students often speak in smaller and easier words or phrases when on their phones. A positive way cell phones could be used is by having students use their phones as a dictionary or a research outlet. Another way is they can use phones as a way of communicating answers between teachers and students. In my opinion, they should not really be used unless it is necessary, especially in elementary. For older grades, I believe that it would not be a huge problem to use phones in the classroom.

Everything now days is technology ran. technology is taking over and i believe that students as well as teachers need to be open and trained in using technology. Cell phones can be great resources. Let's say you wanted your students to look up the three branches of government., if the students have a cell phone all they would have to do is type it into the search engine. Cell phones can also be used as clickers to chime in on answers for the smart board. This would be a great way to interact with the students without the standard raise your hand to talk discussions. I believe there could be certain issues such as texting, or some students may not even own a cell phone, therefore they would not be able to participate. I believe that students are going to bring and use their cell phones to school no matter what they rules are, so I think that we as teachers should embrace it
ReplyDeleteI do agree with integrating cell phones into the classroom Middle school ages and up. As far as elementary schools, they should use something along the lines like a set of school iPads to help introduce the idea of technology into their learning. For the cell phone use to be beneficial, there need to be set rules in place for the usage as well as guidelines. One thing I noticed in the videos is that the students were engaged the whole entire time when using them (essential questions, collaborative groups, HIOT) when the students are engaged, they don't worry about visiting other sites (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc) , it's when they have downtime between lessons or when they are bored. So for the cell phone use to make a positive impact in the classroom, 1.) make sure students are aware and agree with the cell phone use policy (perhaps involve the class in making up the rules, that way they will be more willing to follow them), 2. make sure the lessons are relevant and promote the students to think, that they don't allow for them to be bored of finish easily, 3. use apps or websites that you can see the students work on, have them complete questionnaires on their experience so you know what needs to be worked on and improved for the next lesson you complete. Also, another thing is, don't make it repetitive, do something different so the students will remained engaged.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I used to be against cell phones in the classroom. I thought that the students would spend their time on facebook or texting friends. I have seen so many professors getting frustrated when students are being rude and disrespectful by using them during lectures. However, I realize that students are going to are much more engaged when they are using technology. Some students are going to be defiant anyway, with or without cellphones. I think this is something that has to be addressed with classroom management. When I was growing up, there were no cell phones or laptops. It was a paper and pencil kind of world. Today's students have grown up using technology and this is the norm for them. As I watched the videos, I realized that there are so many positive aspects of having cell phones in schools. Teachers can use cell phones for instant polls to assess progress. This can allow them to readdress areas of weakness or move on to new material when the students have a thorough understanding of the material. I also thought about how many different applications cell phones can have for learning. Their use can easily be applied to any subject area. The video showed how a science teacher was using them as timers and video recorders for accurate documentation of experiments. Another teacher was using them for research and collaboration between the students. The instant access to information is priceless. There are so many new learning apps that are available and we should be taking advantage of them. With the current economy, we have seen education budgets decline steadily. Because the majority of students already have cell phones, we should take advantage of this and integrate them into lesson plans. Another advantage of cell phones is that the students can take their work with them anywhere. Today's students need to be able to compete globally and this requires them to be able to use technology.

While there are positive ways cell phones could be integrated into the classroom, there are negatives as well. I happen to think that the negatives outweigh the positives. Cell phones would be a bigger distraction if they were used in the classroom. It may be difficult for the teacher to monitor every student's use of their cell phone and students may not pay attention to the teacher. Students would be texting, playing games,and visiting social networks if cell phones were allowed in the classroom. I simply do not think it is necessary for cell phones to be allowed in elementary schools.
ReplyDeleteI can see where cell phones can be used in a positive way, it would take a lot of work and time to come up with a system that would work. I think it is worth the time and effort to reach these kids where they are. That is what we are taught to do. They have been raised on technology, they are not scared of it like we are, they are comfortable with it and know how to use it. If they are guided to use it a certain way while in the classroom and with a strict management plan it could open up the learning process in a whole new way.

Some positives of having phones in the classroom would be to aid and enhance learning opportunities. Educational games would be a great way to use cell phones as well as using them to research a specific topic. Cell phones can also be used to take pictures or videos of classroom activities and study at home. In order for cell phones in the classroom to work, the teacher will need to monitor the students and have some sort of guidelines for the students to follow.

It will give teachers a chance to create engaging and life experience lessons that the students will be excited to learn. For example when learning percentages the students can use the tip calculator on their phones to solve problems that they could be faced with in the real world. However I do not feel that cells phones are appropriate for Elementary school. These students are learning the basic skills and should not be given any distractions and cell phones would be a big distraction for these students. Also not all students at this age level do not own cell phones. It would be unfair for to allow the handful of students that do have phones to pull them out throughout class.
ReplyDeleteI think there are positives and negatives to allowing cell phones into the classroom. One major concern that I would have is control. Since there are so many students with some many personal devices it would be difficult to see what sites and apps each student is actually using.
I believe that having cell phones in the classroom can be beneficial, However, I think that there needs to be close monitoring and the students need to be aware of the rules from the very beginning. A teacher can use the cell phones to communicate assignments, start discussions, and contact the student regarding missed work. If the teacher does not watch the students though this could become a distraction and many students could fall behind or start using cell phones for things unrelated to school.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the integration of technology in the classrooms. I think it was the second video that said, "It's like a computer lab in the classroom, and you never have to leave." That is such a strong statement. I've been in a few muscogee county schools now that have trouble sharing the little technology provided by the school, so some schools just leave it out. Why not use what the children already have (provided by their parents) as a classroom resource? It's genius, really. It's amazing to me that these ideas aren't mainstream yet. It is, however, a bit daunting as a future educator to take on the responsibility of overseeing the use of technology in classrooms. Any new idea seems to be scary. I feel that it would be hard to introduce the use of technology to a class that has never used it. There are so many liabilities in using technology and accessing the internet, but those liabilities come with everything, I suppose.
ReplyDeleteI think that the most amazing connections that teachers can use with cell phones and their students is communication. Children these days know how to communicate through technology. They are comfortable with it. Communicating assignments, deadlines, classroom news... It seems to be the most beneficial aspect of using cell phones in the classroom. That's one more way for teachers to reach students, and for students to enjoy it.
Using cell phones in the classroom is an awesome idea to me. Technology will never disappear so teachers need to embrace the idea of cell phones in the class rooms. Cell phones now today have more uses than just calling and texting. There are so many apps and websites that teachers can use in the classroom it is ridiculous. Teachers can send out homework through text message, do group research projects using smart phones for the internet, and even have students answer questions using their phones on the internet. The potential is limitless, educators just have to reach for it.

The school I student taught at used cell phones in the classrooms and we even used them in the band room. I found that the students were not really using them for texting and were engaged. The students are engaged in learning the material because they are learning it with a device they know, can use, and intrests them. It is a more advanced way to do activities, give practice tests, submit data, and record. If in my Spanish class, it would be a good way for the students to hear their own voice speaking and practicing. The students could also hear how the language is supposed to sound by going to a website with the audible vocabulary. It is a great mode of communication in what is supposed to be a communication class, Spanish. With their cellphones, the students would be able to connect with people all over the world. The cons would be that the student may abuse the privilege by texting or looking up things on the internet they are not supposed to, or checking their social media, facebook, instagram, and twitter. Their penmanship is also comprimised becuase they are spending less time writing, and more time in text mode.
ReplyDeleteActually, I know a lot of people are unsure about phones being used in classrooms with elementary school students, but we have to ask ourselves just why we have an issue with this. Are the majority of the students equipped with cellphones? If it's an issue of not many children having the cellphones then yes, it's not viable to use them because the children do not, as a majority have access to the resource. However, in ten years, who is to say that it won't become the norm? If all the kids are going to have the phones at any age, I say use them. It's basically a little computer; a resource that should be used instead of squandered. Children, adults.. anyone has the capacity to become distracted an not use a tool correctly, as can be seen by some people browsing facebook while at work. Children are going to find something to distract them no matter what. Before it was facebook, it was note passing, was it not? Give the kids something to do and keep them engaged because if you don't give them an activity they'll enjoy they won't pay attention whether they have a phone or not.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the middle when it comes to integrating cell phones in classrooms. I say this because the youtube videos showed that cell phones can be a good and bad thing. I think I would allow cell phones in my classroom if I'm a science teacher because they can be very helpful when looking for research, taking pictures when you're outside, and/or recording data. If a student doesn't have a phone I will supply a lap top and/or pair them up with somebody who has a cell phone. When there is day when we don't need cell phones I will tell the student to put them up and pull them out only when they are needed. I think cell phones are perfect for science classes and other classes but its up to the teacher to lay down the rules about when to use them or not.

I think it would be great idea for children in today's society simply because many children have these devices and use them on a daily basis whether it's making a phone call, surfing the web, or even checking their emails. Children are familiar with the devices and are interested in them, which would make the learning process a lot of fun and less stressful for teachers because the students can use the devices to their advantage. However, I do feel like it depends on the grade in which you plan to use these devices because some students may not be able to use them properly,have lack of maturity or understanding that it's for educational purposes only and may not even own a cellphone/ other electronic devices.... ReplyDeleteI am a tech geek and love the idea of using cell phones or at least the "smart" part of the cell phone. Now I am a realistic person and I know as with everything they can be misused. This is when classroom management becomes a big part. Setting down rules such as cell phones can only be used during a class participation time when we all our using them to answer a question or look something up. No phone usage and all phones will be on silence unless the project needs something different. Maybe even suggesting phones are only out if the assignment requires them. Give them notice the day before in case they are one of the few students who actually leave their phone in their locker. This will only work and be fair to all if those who do not have cell phones or smart phones for whatever reason have classroom technology that is comparable to use. We don't want to embarrass anyone or make them feel bad for whatever reason they might not have cell phones. But for those who don't write clearly or hate to write will find this a better option. Not to mention the paper it will cut back on and waste. This can also help those students who forget or copy information off the board incorrectly to get the correct information. So yes as long as EVERYONE has something available to them and ALL comply with the when and where to use the cell phone I think it would be beneficial to the learning environment overall and would use it. Not to mention this is the manner in which today's student is learning and living.

I really liked the idea of teachers being able to send out a mass text that the students have to answer too. It’s a really good idea, but as an early childhood major I have seen cell phones in a child’s hand during a school day. Students as early as 2nd, based on my experience in school, have had cell phones wether or not they can use it doesn’t matter. With the right amount of searching and watching what the students are looking at it could be a positive influence.

Instead of spending money on school books and the paper to print assignments students could get nicer facilities with even better technology. The teachers could receive more funding for their classrooms and we would be doing our part to help the planet by recycling. For two, just as it says in the video, technology is used in our day to day life. It is important for students to learn how to use technology so that they can have the skills to be productive in their own lives. However, I do agree that integrating cell phones into schools is a good idea, like in middle school and high school. I think it is a great way to get high schoolers more excited about going to school and learning. This all being said, I would only agree with this if there is an effective way of monitoring the students to make sure they are not doing anything but school work. There really is no need for students at the elementary grade level to have cell phones in the classroom. They are positive in the fact that they can provide easy access to the internet to look up certain things and do research easily. I've also heard of some teachers using students and their smart phones to answer questions and answer multiple choice questions. There are also lots of educational apps that can be used in the classroom. There are a lot of positive things that come with using cell phones in the classroom I just feel like the negative outweighs the positive.
As a preservice elementary school teacher, I do not think that cell phones are the perfect learning tool for class. While many elementary-aged children have cell phones, not all of them will. Plus some students may feel bad because their phone isn't as nice as someone else's.

When a teacher is in front of the class lecturing, of course the students are going to be texting and facebooking and not paying attention. But when they are using their cell phones for their assignments, they don't have time to check facebook or text their people back. I liked that the text poll thing they had. That would be good to use for homework questions. Plus, if teachers have their students' phone numbers, they can remind everyone about assignments and tests.

ReplyDeleteBeing a preservice elementary school teacher, I do not know if I believe the use of cell phones would be one of the most efficient way of teaching.Though students are becoming owners of cell phones at an earlier age now, I do not believe that it would be something that would benefit most of them. Some of the students that are extremely technologically advanced would probably find this type of learning style really interesting, however as such young children it could become a huge distraction and may even cause confusion, taking the meaning behind why we are even using the cell phones away.

ReplyDeleteI completely agree with integrating cell phones into the classroom for upper elementary and beyond; however, for the lower grades, I do not think this will work very well. Although younger and younger children are learning to use cell phones proficiently, I do not think that the number of children in pre-k, k, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade that are tech savvy would be great enough to effectively integrate cell phones into these classrooms. This could work for 4th and 5th grade as long as some strict guidelines and rules were set into place beforehand.

The students could use the phones to do research more efficiently without having the whole class relocate to a computer lab. I think that fifth graders using cell phones in the classroom would be more appropriate then say 4th grade and below. I think the attention span for the younger children is not there to properly use cell phones for instructional purposes.

I really liked the idea of being able to send reminders to students via text message reminding them to study or about an assignment due. I think cell phones are an almost essential tool in our classrooms. They can be used for so many things. We use Remind101, Instagram, and PollEverywhere to enhance the content and connectivity of our seventh graders. Since the advent of smart phones, each student found a minicomputer at their fingertips. Therefore, we also utilize them in our class as a standard research or information gathering point. If a student needs to find a fact, spell a word, or look up a definition, he/she has a tool readily available to do so. Additionally, during individual work sessions, we allow the students to access their own music through whatever app or platform they wish. Of course, we have set limits. If a student is off task, his music becomes distracting, or other situations where learning is impacted, then the phone is removed from use. During exams, there is no phone usage under any circumstances. And the access to cell phones is a carrot to entice correct behavior and focused learning. The point is that cell phones pervade our lives and cannot be eliminated. Rather than fight a losing battle, I believe it's much better to use the phones as a tool, an incentive, and a resource.

There are many educational websites, games, and apps out there that should be put to good use in our classes. We need to utilize any and every way of teaching the curriculum to our students. By giving multiple ways of presenting information to our students, we are giving those students a higher chance of comprehension and retention.
ReplyDeleteI had stated in the other blog response some of the many positive ways of using phones(among other technology) withing the classroom. Some of the major ones used include e-readers, search engines (such as Google), educational games, calculators, measurement apps, video, camera, paint programs, and educational YouTube videos. All of these can give the students another dimension to a subject being taught. By giving cellphones a chance within the class instead of banning them, we also gain the support of our students. They are no longer 'hating' us for banning them and can focus their attention on using them to their own advantage.
I think integrating cell phones in the classrooms is an amazing idea. As far as in an elementary school setting, I do not believe this is a good idea because the students would be more interested in the phone than the lesson being produced through the cell phone. Also you will have to teach those in grades lower than 3rd (and maybe even those in 3rd and above!) how to use the cell phone.

ReplyDeleteI think that it is time for school systems to start considering integrating cell phones in the classroom for certain age groups. From the information given in the video, the schools that are allowing cell phone use have had positive results. Middle and high school students would gain the most benefit from this. Cell phones will empower students by giving them instant access to information and allow them to be engaged in a collaborative manner. Texting is now a way of life and can be a way of communication for teachers and their students. I believe this will increase student-to-teacher connection. Students would have the benefit of their own mobile technology by using a cell phone or other device with no added costs for the school system.

I have mixed feelings on the topic of integrating cell phones in the classroom. I do believe that technology such as laptops and smartboards should be used in classrooms, but I'm just not sure about cell phones. When I typically think about cell phones in schools, I think about students texting their friends not paying one bit of attention to their teacher. Or maybe they were paying attention, but while typing that specific text message, they missed a very important detail that the teacher mentioned because in that moment they were too busy on their cell phone. I just personally feel as if cell phones can be a distraction within the classroom which is why many schools have banned the use of cell phones. For example, the school I am student teaching in right now, the students can have their cell phones at school, but they have to be locked up in their locker all day.

This is a website you can go to and post a question for the students to answer by text messaging the answer in. Also, cell phones can be a great source for research. Teachers will sometimes allow students to use the internet on their smart phones to look up information that is related to the content they are learning. Teachers also usually have class websites where students can access their grades, assignments, test information, events, etc. on the website. This is a great resource for students and it is easily accessible through their smart phones.

ReplyDeleteTo be honest, before watching these 2 videos I would say that I was against integrating cell phones in the classroom completely. I think that cellphones could be extremely distracting when used the wrong way. The temptation for the students to use the cellphone in non-educational uses would rise. Allowing a child to use their cellphone in class would open the door to them being tempted to use social networks and texting. But now, after watching the 2 videos I find myself questioning my previous beliefs. I see how cell phone use in the classroom could be beneficial to the learning of the student by introducing a medium of communication and learning that they are familiar with. Also in order to keep up with an ever changing world, I think it is beneficial to encourage use of cell phone technology.

In schools, students could use their phone to watch presentations, view YouTube videos, and take online quizzes posted by the teacher or research topics. They could also use the many app features that come with phones now as educational tools in science experiments or in class activities. Think of all the things you do with your cellphone, the possibilities are endless. The key is how educators can moderate it.

ReplyDeleteFor younger students, I believe that cell phones would be more of a distraction than a help in the classroom. Elementary students do not have the self-control necessary to only use the phone for the designated activities. (Plus, I do not believe that a third grader should have a cell phone.) Middle and high school students, however, could benefit greatly from cell phone use in the classroom. There would need to be a strict policy about ringing phones and using phones during other instructional times and for unintended purposes. Older students have phones and, as teachers, we have to be flexible and grow with the technology.
How can these phones be used in a positive way in the schools?
I love the idea of having students text in answer to questions and having them displayed on the board for several reasons. First of all, it gives the shy students a voice in the classroom environment that does not force them to speak in front of peers. It also gives the teacher a quick snapshot of students understanding or opinion, depending on the question. The student who may be struggling with a concept or did not understand the question will be able to view their peers’ responses and therefore increase understanding. Using the current technology can give the teacher flexibility to reach more students by adding to the variety of teaching styles used to enhance learning. There would need to be policies in place to decrease the likelihood of potential problems and teachers should be moving around the classroom to monitor activity when cell phones are out.
In today’s education world cell phones are a touchy subject for some, but I think being that the times are changing and today students are digital natives I think cell phones are okay for certain age groups. I think student’s kindergarten to sixth grade should use other devices such as Ipads or computers to use within the classroom. I believe cell phones for middle school age students to high school senior are appropriate only if everyone in the classroom has a cell phone. I really like the Florida school district approach on cell phones, “If you can’t beat them join them.” The Florida school district registered everyone’s cell phone to a network where the teacher could ask a question and the student’s could text the teacher the answer. But as a teacher you have to take certain precautious, because with some students if you give them and inch they will definitely take a mile. I think certain rules should be set in place for the students as well as the teacher so everyone starts on an equal playing field and everyone knows the rules. I think cell phones and electronic devices or social media networks are a great asset to a school’s curriculum within certain limitation.

ReplyDeleteWith regards to integrating cell phones in the classroom I feel that this is something that can go either way. Yes, I can agree with this because students in this day and age are addicted to technology in some type of way, and by bringing it in the classroom it could probably help certain students that need that extra hands on interaction. And I can also disagree with this because some students could possibly abuse this opportunity to use their cell phones for something other than the lesson like games and texting.

Like I previously stated, using the cell phones in the classroom can help those hands on students. It also could provide variety to a once dreary lesson and make it more relate able to the children.
From experience, I have used my cellphone in classes when they were not allowed. If students were to not get sidetracked and were able to focus, I think that integrating cellphones and other electronics into classrooms would be a great idea. Since technology has gotten more popular, there are several ways that you can use iPads, cellphones or tablets to engage children and do activities. I do think that there are several ways that cellphones, and other technologies can be used in a productive way, such as googling information and having online discussions.

Elementary aged students would not be as ideal because most students do not have cell phones and cell phones would be more of a distraction for this age group. However, older students could find integrating cell phones in the classroom to be beneficial because they could use their resources which would help them out greatly. The older age group students would enjoy using their cell phones and it could help increase their participation levels in class.

Cell phones can be used in a positive way in class because there are many different ways that teachers can use cell phones in class. Students would have access to email, have different group messages and other study apps and resources. It would change things up and put learning into a different perspective for both students and the teachers. Every student has a different learning style and technology, especially cell phones, can help reach students on all learning levels and styles.

ReplyDeleteI found the QR codes that the children were scanning on their iPad’s interesting. The curriculum is integrating technology and helping students. I could definitely see this form of technology and integrating iPad’s into the warm ups and everyday lessons that will be taught in my classroom. Students could use iPad’s for their benefit when learning to write certain words and letters. This will add something exciting and fun to the classroom and will give students a new way to learn things.

We should try to infuse as much technology as possible in our daily instruction because technology is constantly advancing and becoming more apparent in student’s lives. I am truly on the fence about integrating cell phones in the classroom. All of the thing they want you to do on your cell phone can be done on laptops. I know that students can still IM with each other but that least it can be monitored. On the other hand, schools don’t have enough money to supply each student with a laptop. That’s why allowing them to use their own cell phone would be better on the schools, but you lose the chance to monitor what they are truly viewing
ReplyDeleteI think a positive way cell phones is by alerting students and parents of work that the students have to do. This would be great because you some do not have access to email. Also sending it home with a younger student it will get lost between the classroom and their front door.
I think that integrating cell phones in the classroom would be beneficial for older students but not for elementary students. First of all, not all elementary students have cell phones. Secondly, most elementary students could be easily distracted when they use their own cell phones. I think that other types of technology such as any classroom computers, iPads, or iPods would be more beneficial to elementary students. They would be less likely to be distracted since learning apps, etc. would already be on these devices for students to use. As students get older however I think that cell phones can definitely be integrated into the classroom. I really like the idea of students receiving or sending homework by text or email. Also, students can do a great deal of research about any topic that they are learning about in school. This information can be shared between students and allows for a lot of learning to occur. I think that teachers and schools have to try to teach and reach students who are growing up in a technological world.
ReplyDeleteWhile most students in our society have cellphones, I believe that we must help them understand the appropriate times and places to use this technology. Just as students have to learn that using cell phones at formal dinners, competitions (spelling bees, science olympiad, etc), and conferences is not appropriate, they must also realize that the school day is not the time for their cellphone. Despite the numerous educational apps and programs that are available, teachers are not able to monitor students work to ensure that they are only using their cellphones for the approved activity instead of texting friends or socializing via sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do not believe that cellphones should not be used at school, I am not totally against technology. There are many resources today such SmartBoard responders, web 2.0 activities, and computer models/demonstrations that can be monitored more efficiently and are extremely useful in helping students understand difficult concepts and providing quick feedback for both the students and teachers.

We are in an age of technology so it is understandable that cell phones could very well be the future for educating students. However, there are many issues I can see arising out of implementing the use of cell phones in the classroom. For teenagers and young children alike, cell phones can be quite distracting. Students might be tempted to indulge in other activities such as browsing the web, texting, or playing games during class instruction. Then again, it does have its advantages such as receiving immediate feedback from teachers or sending in assignments in the case of an absence. Another advantage is the ability to gain access to global information instantaneously. One important thing we must consider if we are to allow cell phones in the classroom is the accessibility of cell phones. Not all students will be able to afford these devices, and not all students will know how to utilize a smartphone. All students need to learn so the tools we use in the classroom need to be things that all students can access.
There are many issues that could arise when trying to integrate cell phones into the class room with the risk of texting in class, making phone calls, surfing the internet, and cyber bullying; but I do believe that there are some good uses for cell phones in the classroom. You can have your students download educational apps that pertain to the curriculum the teacher is covering and they can also access the internet to research information if they are unable to have access to a computer.

I know that in high school that students love to text, tweet, and etc. during class. I would tell my students that they would receive a grade of zero or lose points toward the assignment if they were to venture off into something else other than what I have asked of them to do. Cell phones in the schools could be used in a positive way. Students have to learn how to live in and embrace technology. Teachers would have to opportunity to show the students how to appropriately use technology as a tool for learning.
I personally do not feel cellphones should be allowed in the classroom. I feel as if cellphones are a distraction. Students will not pay attention to the lesson and will be playing or doing something else on their phones. Also, students could do something that could potentially get the teacher in trouble. I have seen this done in a middle school. The student posted something on the Internet, and the teacher was fired. In today's society, there is so much a teacher has to be careful with. Cellphones in the classroom is one.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I feel cellphones in the classroom is not a good decision, there are some ways it can be positive. Students can use their cellphones for interactive response. Teacher's can have their students text in the correct answers. Also, students can do research on their phones. Also, students can watch videos on an educational topic.
I think that cell phones can be a excellent tool in the classroom setting. Many times I feel that the main issue to having students using cell phones during class is the distraction factor. I feel as if the students are engaged through learning then they will be much more apt to pay attention. Another reason I think many teachers avoid using cell phones in the classroom is because many teachers are afraid of immuring themselves and their classrooms in this type of technology. I think that if students see us teachers taking a risk and involving cell phones and technology in our classrooms that they will be much more apt to learn. Think about it, technology is one of the most important things to our students today. Why not utilize something that is so important to the students in a positive manner in the classroom. I feel that overall the advantages of using cell phones in the classroom far outweigh the disadvantages.

Nowadays, students are getting bored faster than before because of all the technology and temptation they have outside of the classroom, if teaching will allow students to use their cell phones for educating purposes it will combine their desire for technology and learning something new.

Many school districts allow students to participate in this to see if technology can be utilized in their schools and become a cost effective way for schools to save money on supplies. Since many students have cell phones and access to the internet this is a positive way for districts struggling with funds to allow students to bring their own devices when schools lack enough personal computers and laptops for every student.
Teachers and administrators can't begin to rid the schools and classrooms of cell phones and other technology. The fact is that a "zero-tolerance" policy will never work. If the amount of energy spent on ridding schools of cell phones were focused on turning them into tools for learning, then the nuisance suddenly becomes an extremely helpful tool for teachers and students alike. I have never thought that ridding the school of cell phones was the correct route. This may be because I was a student that battled with my teachers about having cell phones. Ultimately students will always have these devices, and harnessing their helpful nature is much more productive than trying to get them out of the schools. The amount of information available, right at our finger tips is overwhelming. Using cell phones and other devices opens the world up to students and teachers. Gone are the days of old textbooks giving out-dated information, or teachers relying on the same monotonous tools for their lessons. Now teachers can connect their students to the world, and students can respond and interact in real time with their devices.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that there is value in using cell phones and similar devices to enhance the classroom, I feel that it is hard to achieve a situation where the usage is actually helping the students to learn. Although there is a school wide wifi network at my high school that blocks certain sites, students are still able to use their data network to access social media, and they could also be texting instead of on task. It is very hard to regulate whether every student is doing what they are supposed to do. I have also had to deal with a lot of social media and cyber bullying drama with my students this semester so it seems like a bad idea to allow that element into my classroom. I certainly think that the ease of having google and other internet tools right there, but the students have to be mature and reliable enough to handle that opportunity. Also, as a theatre teacher my class is mostly made up of performance activities and the use of cell phones would be an inappropriate distraction.
ReplyDeleteI agree with integrating cell phones into the classroom completely. Students respond well to being able to use their own devices. This also leads to many new, creative ways for a teacher to introduce information. I believe that as long as the teacher sets rules from the very beginning and enforces those rules throughout the school year, students will not abuse the opportunity to use their phones in the class. With the use of online polls, text apps (where the teacher can send messages to all of the students), and other apps that are becoming available, the teacher can reach those students who usually would not want to speak up in the class discussions. This is also a great way to get a feel of how the students with the content they are learning. The teacher can decide if a topic needs to be retaught and there are sites the teacher can use to allow the students to anonymously answer questions so no one is embarrassed! I am all for cell phones in classrooms!
ReplyDeleteI agree with integrating cell phones into the lesson. My students have the tendency to get bored very easily in British literature and so instead of having to reprimand students regarding the using of their cellphones. During one lesson we were able to use define the terms using their cellphones. We also created poems and the students were able to use their phones create beats and songs so that they perform them. I also had the students download the scan app so that they could play scavenger hunt for facts during the class.
ReplyDeleteI am on the fence when it comes to integrating cell phones in the classroom. I think it is a good idea for High school students however if I were to allow it in my class I would have a system in place where the student could not enter the classroom without putting their cell phone in the basket by the door and taking a popsickle stick in replace of it. Instead of using cell phones I agree more with the idea of having a classroom set of Ipads or the google nexus. Each student would have a number assigned to them which would be the number attached to the ipad, that ipad would be assigned to the student the whole school year. A positive way the students could use cell phones in the classroom would be the access that it allows to Spanish apps. There are many great Spanish apps that would allow us to play games and go over content in the classroom. The Duolingo app for iphones could be used in the classroom as well as practice in the home with the language. It would be great to pair along with the content taught in class.
ReplyDeleteI agree with having cell phones inside the classroom but only at secondary grade levels. The the growth of technology is growing rapidly. Cell phones are used daily by simple communicating between email, text messages, and social media. If I were to have a upper grade level class I would use cell phones within lesson plans. For example using barcodes throughout the classes and having student scan the barcodes with the cell phone. the barcodes could have notes, equations, writing topics, questions of the day, etc.

ReplyDeleteI agree that we should integrate cell phone, but to an extent. Cell phones can definitely promote an interest in students, however, they can also be a huge distraction. There are a ton of different apps which we could implement in our lessons that could be beneficial to the learning process. However, there is a downside in the fact that students will be more likely to be off task if they are able to use their phones. A teacher cannot be right behind every student at all times which means students could be texting or on social media on their phones instead of whatever they are supposed to be doing. Also, if we allow students to use cell phones we could single other kids out who may not have a phone. This could lead to bullying or making a student feel left out.
Phones can be used in a positive way by being another resource in which students can research on. You can access google and any other helpful website via a smart phone no problem. Also students have the ability to download educational apps which they could use in the classroom.
I believe cell phones can be valuable to students in middle and high schools. I think it's a great tool for students to be able to use reality in such a way that they will when they get into the real world. People overestimate the ineffectiveness of cell phones. They think the phones are too much of a distraction, even though phones are clearly the main source of communication to the world we live in. All types of information can be transmitted through cell phones, emails on cell phones, pictures/videos of student work, etc. I think it's ridiculous to believe that cell phones should not be allowed, even though they are used for just about everything technology-wise in the real world. Cell phones can be used for both discipline, used as a resource for technology and research, communication, as well as in case of an emergency. I think cell phones are a must in the classroom. Cell phones are not the problem, lack of supervision, and the yearning to text during class is the problem.
ReplyDeleteThe thought of cell phones in schools can be intimidating, especially due to the negative context that has been placed on this subject and the fact that they are banned in many schools. Although, I believe technology is something that should be integrated into the classroom to the full extent that it can be and that we should not be afraid of it. Students today have grown up around technology and it is a central part of their lives. Like the video discussed, students are becoming less and less engaged in the classroom when they are not presented with fun and interesting ways to complete assignments and activities. I believe that by incorporating technology into the classroom, such as cell phones that this gap can be bridged. While there are many cons to allowing cell phones into the classroom, such as the fact that they may be hard to monitor and that they are a distraction, I believe that rules and boundaries can be put into place to help with this problem. I believe that starting even in the younger grades that incorporating cell phones and other type POD devices into the classroom, can provide many benefits. I loved many of the examples that were provided in the classroom, such as taking a quiz and receiving instant feedback, being able to conduct research, taking advantage of the many free learning apps that are available, blogs, etc. When deciding to incorporate cell phones and other technology into the classroom, I believe that it is important to consider your class individually. Some students may not have access to these types of devices and you should be able to provide the same or similar device to the students who can not provide their own.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with integrating cell phones into the classroom. Technology is a huge part of everyday life now, so why not use it in every way possible. Most classrooms have classroom sets of tablets or iPods, so using smart phones could be just as valuable. As long as all the rules and procedures are known ahead of time, it could be effective. It will also require good classroom management by the teacher. If these are all met, cell phone use could be positive. Ways in which they could be used are in using QR codes around the room for lessons, during lessons students good have access to google to look information up, or even as a way for different people or groups to watch different videos that pertain to the lesson. Also, starting this at a young age may be beneficial. It would give children a chance to grow up with this, and in turn it they would know how and when cell phone use is acceptable. Overall, I believe that with proper monitoring and management, cell phone use could be very beneficial. One other aspect, is to only allow cell phones out in the class when they are needed for your lesson, that way it is easier to check and make sure the students are doing what they are supposed to be doing one them.

I believe by taking them away the students become even more distracted because they are too busy focusing on how they can sneak and use their phones. If you can allow them to use something they love while learning in class and you can tie it to the lesson I think that it will engage the students in class. The phones can be used in a positive way in the classroom by allowing students to use calculators and to look up information. Yes, students will still probably text some while do this, but they will still be able to use their phones to actively participate in class. Rules would still need to be set for the use of phones in class so that students will not take advantage of this privilege. The phone has many features that can be used in the classroom for learning. Teachers can ask students to download apps (free apps) that can be used to help the learning environment and get the students engaged in class.
ReplyDeleteYes I do agree with integrating cell phones in the classroom. Cell phones can be beneficial in so many different ways. Children can explore outside of the four walls of a classroom. It is so much faster and easier to Google an answer, or get information about a certain subject. Using devices is also a way to get all the students involved. I haven’t met a child yet who doesn’t like to be on a cell phone or tablet. I think students will be more willing and excited to research if they were allowed to use their phone verses reading a book. Today’s society is so technologically advanced it is doing the children a disservice to band devices. We as teachers need to embrace technology. However, it is essential that we find a way to closely monitor the students to ensure they stay on task. Devices can be good and bad but I for one think the good out weights that bad.
